The success of surgical stents depends heavily on the materials used in their construction. Advances in biomedical engineering have introduced materials that enhance flexibility, durability, and compatibility with human tissue. These improvements have significantly elevated patient safety and procedural success.


Metallic stents remain widely used due to their strength and reliability. Materials such as stainless steel, nitinol, and cobalt-chromium alloys offer excellent radial force while maintaining flexibility. Nitinol, in particular, is valued for its shape-memory properties, allowing the stent to expand precisely once deployed inside the body.


Polymer-based stents have gained attention for their versatility. These stents are often used in temporary applications where long-term implantation is unnecessary. Their softer structure reduces irritation and discomfort, making them suitable for sensitive anatomical areas such as the urinary tract.


Biodegradable stents represent a significant step forward in patient-centered care. Designed to dissolve naturally over time, these stents eliminate the need for surgical removal. This innovation reduces procedural risk and enhances patient convenience, particularly in pediatric and short-term therapeutic settings.


Surface coatings have also improved stent safety. Drug-eluting coatings release medication gradually to reduce inflammation, prevent tissue overgrowth, and minimize the risk of restenosis. Antimicrobial coatings further protect against infection, a critical consideration in immunocompromised patients.


Rigorous testing ensures that stent materials meet high safety standards. Biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and mechanical performance are evaluated to prevent adverse reactions. Regulatory oversight ensures that only thoroughly tested designs reach clinical use.
